Home Workout Must Have Items

At some point in our lives, we are all looking for must have items that can make a home workout easier.

I started my healthy lifestyle about 4 years ago where I was working out regularly and eating clean (you can see my post on my weight loss journey here). Although majority of my fitness journey was working out at a gym, I still used some equipment at home for days we were experiencing bad weather or days I just didn’t feel like going out.

A year ago I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy but since then I’ve struggled to get back into the gym- so the little time I had for myself only allowed me to get a workout in from home.

Now that all gyms are forced to close, we have no choice but to work out from home. If you didn’t already know, working out from home can be just as effective as working out at a gym. Although you really don’t need much equipment to get a good workout in, I’ve found items that have made working out from home so much easier for me.

Here Are 13 Must Have Items To Work Out From Home

Thick Yoga Mat

Besides this being a great mat for yoga, I love using it to do other workouts. I don’t have much carpet at home, so this item is a MUST for you to work out from home. Unlike traditional yoga mats, this one is double the thickness making those long 1 minute planks a little less painful. This mat is also moisture resistant, has a textured non-slip side, and is great quality.

Foam Roller

We all know stretching is important for before and after working out. Adding a foam roller to your stretching routine helps with any muscle pain, increases blood flow, promotes faster injury recovery and rehabilitation, and overall feels so good.

There are many foam rollers on the market, my favorite is this one because it comes with three different size ridges. The smaller one known as the thumb zone is the most intense massage zone that mimics the finger tips and thumbs of a massage therapist. The medium size ridges mimics human fingers and is designed for tissue flushing. Lastly the largest size ridges, known as the palm zone, offers a gentler massage and mimics the therapist’s palms. Besides getting 3 different uses out of this one roller, it also comes in a variety of colors in case you’re OCD like me and needs all my equipment to be matching!

Bosu Balance Ball

I used this every time I worked out at the gym and once I found this online I immediately got it. Regardless of what muscle group you are working out, you can incorporate workouts with this ball in any of them. You can do push ups off this ball, stand on it and do squats, or even work out your back while laying flat on it. Not only will this balance ball help you with your balance coordination, but it will also help with rehabilitation and stretching. Best part is that this ball comes with resistant bands!

Skipping Rope

Bet you didn’t know that 10 minutes of skipping rope is equivalent to the practice effect of running for 30 minutes! Skipping has been my go to quick cardio work out from home. As a busy mom, my free time is limited so having a skipping rope at home allows me to get a quick workout in throughout my day. Whether its 15 mins in the morning or 10 mins before bed, skipping rope takes away any guilt of not being able to go to the gym.

I’ve tried different skipping ropes, but my favorite is this one because of the great quality for such a low price. The handles absorb moisture well and are comfortable to hold onto, can be adjusted to multiple sizes, and wont rust after time.

Sweet Sweat Waist Trimmer

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this product- I use it every time I work out from home and also at the gym.

This sweat waist trimmer is designed to help improve thermogenic activity and makes you sweet more in your abdominal area, therefore helping you lose more fat there. Unlike a regular waist trimmer, the size can be adjusted to your body with the Velcro closure so it’ll never be too tight. It has a non slip material on the inside so it won’t slip when you’re sweating, and its super flexible making it comfortable to wear during any exercise. The quality of this product is amazing and it comes with a little bag- easy and convenient for on the go!

Ankle / Wrist Weights

I actually wear these even if I’m not working out! Ankle weights are great to add to any leg workout or to simply go for a walk. I used to wear these all the time whenever I went bike riding- it gave me the same affect as spinning without spending so much on a spin bike.

These ankle weights come in a variety of weight levels (from 1lb each to 10lbs each), are adjustable to fit everyone, and are super durable and won’t rip. For only $10 this is a must for working out from home.

Kettlebell Weights

I love leg day- so any equipment for me to use on leg day is a home workout must have. I love using these kettlebell weights for squatting, throws, rotational swings and even for Russian twists. The handles are the perfect size to comfortably hold them, and like the skipping rope- it’s also sweat resistances for a better grip. These weights vary from 5 pounds to 50 pounds.

Dumbbell Weights

Along with the Kettlebell Weights, dumbbell weights are also a must have to work out from home! This brand of dumbbell weights come in many weight levels- starting from 1 lb to 20 lbs. For someone who doesn’t have much upper body strength, these are great because the weight levels start at such a low weight and increases slowly. Most dumbbells I’ve come across are either 5 lbs or 10 lbs. I have a 10 pound dumbbell at home but since I haven’t worked out in so long, it’s a little difficult to use for some workouts. The 5 pound weight doesn’t challenge me enough so I’m glad I came across these dumbbells. I’m currently using a pair of 7 pound weights.

Dumbbell Rack

This is great for when you are limited in space. I got this dumbbell rack to keep all my weights together in one area. It’s thin so doesn’t take up much room and it’s compact. This item really gives you the “home gym” feel even if your workout area is the corner of the living room.

Ab Roller

Don’t underestimate this little guy- your abs will be sore for days! The most simple gym equipment yet so effective. This roller is super sturdy and has handles similar to the skipping rope, therefore making it easy to hold onto for a while. The rubber wheel is non-skid making it roll effortlessly across tile, wood, carpet, grass, everything. You can easily take it apart and put it together, and because it’s so lightweight and portable, this is an amazing product to bring while traveling for a quick mini workout.

Core Sliders

Sure we all want to lose weight, but we also want to get toned and have a sexy stomach (am I right or am I right??). Along with the ab roller, these core sliders are another must have to work out from home. These are perfect for mountain climbers, planks or pikes and can be used on both carpet and wood floors. Working out with these make such a difference that you don’t even need to do that many of them. I use these during commercial breaks while watching tv and still feel a burn the next day.

Resistant Bands

Another alternative to dumbbells are resistant bands. With 3 different weights to chose from, you can do almost all the arm workouts with these bands than you can with dumbbells. The bands themselves are very light but the tensile strength when pulling can be 10, 15 or even 20 pounds depending on which band you are using. These bands come with a little pouch, making it so easy to travel with.

Resistant Leg Bands

Another kind of resistant bands that I love are these leg bands. These are amazing for squats, lunges, and any other leg workout. I previously got these bands, but because they are thinner, they would slip and curl on my thighs whenever they were stretched. Once I switched to these bands I never had that issue again. This pack also comes with 3 sizes for a light, medium and heavy resistance level. My favorite thing about these bands are that unlike the original rubber ones I had, these are made with a soft fabric that is gentle on the skin, but also a fabric that is breathable.

Insulated Water Bottle

Last but not least, I think an insulated water bottle is an essential when you work out from home! I’m the kind of person that needs to drink ice cold water not only when working out but at any time- I hate drinking warm water. If you’re like me, this bottle should be in your cart ready to check out. I’ve left this bottle out with water and ice for over 24 hours and when I reached for it, there was still ice in it! This bottle can even keep drinks hot for over 6 hours (if you want to carry coffee or tea with you) and comes in many different colors and sizes. There are many accessories you can get for this bottle like these replacement lids that has different mouth spouts and these stickers to decorate your bottle for a cute personalized touch.

Besides these 13 items that I find make working out from home so much easier, I also recommend getting a cardio machine if you have the space and money for it. You can find a spin bike on amazon for as low as $225 or this space saving treadmill for $236. You don’t need all of this equipment to get a good workout from home, one or two is sufficient to get you started.
