People wrongly assume sunscreen is only for the summertime, so I’m sharing 6 reasons why you should be using sunscreen every day along with my favorite ones.
I used to be one to lay out in the sun (usually with just tanning oil) trying to get as dark as I possibly can. IF I ever put on sunscreen it would be when my parents made me and it usually was only once a day. I never burned in the sun so I assumed I wasn’t doing any harm to my skin.
Then reality hit me- aka lots of videos online, my dermatologist and good ol’ google.
Sunscreen should be applied everyday, multiple times a day regardless if it’s sunny or not. Did you know that 80% of the sun’s rays can pass through the clouds? Or that up to 80% of UV rays can reflect off snow?? UV exposure is greater the higher the altitude, so sunscreen is a MUST for those ski trips in the middle of winter or hikes in the fall!
6 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Sunscreen Every Day
1. It prevents you from getting sunburn
The most obvious one and the one reason why we’re told from a young age to wear sunscreen- it keeps you from getting sun burned! Sun burn is so uncomfortable and can easily ruin a vacation (we’ve all been there and if you haven’t consider yourself blessed).
2. It protects you skin from UV rays
Because of the depletion of the ozone layer, our risk of sun damage from harmful UV rays have increased. It only takes 5 to 10 mins for for UV rays to damage your skin and it can cause wrinkles, leathery skin, liver spots, actinic keratosis, solar elastosis and can even cause eye problems.
3. It reduces your chance of getting skin cancer
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention), 71,943 people were diagnosed with melanomas of the skin in 2013, and 9,394 of those cases were fatal. A quick personal story: someone I knew got skin cancer on his left arm from driving. He was a driver for work and spent hours driving daily and of course never wore sunscreen. The sun always hit his left arm while driving and although that wasn’t the only reason why he got skin cancer, it definitely increased his chances of getting it.
4. It reduces skin discoloration
Age spots (aka sunsports/liver spots) are caused by hyperpigmentation of the skin and can magnify the look of aging. They’re usually a brownish color and appear as patches on your skin- usually found on hands, face, head and arms in both men an women. Applying sunscreen frequently helps avoid these spots.
5. It prevents sun sensitivity
For those who suffer from sun-sensitive conditions such as lupus and/or rosacea, sunscreens can help prevent solar irritation. Exposure to UV rays can lead to redness and burning of the skin & overall severity of those conditions.
6. It’s too easy to use- there are NO excuses!
Last reason why you should be using sunscreen everyday is because its SO easy to find and apply. You can find sunscreen pretty much anywhere- from drug stores to makeup stores to the grocery store. Along with finding it pretty much anywhere, they make sunscreen with different applicators. Whether you’re squeezing it out of a bottle or quickly spraying it over your body, the excuse of “not having enough time to put some on” is non existent. The even have sunscreen that applies on your skin like chapstick!
Now for some of my favorite sunscreens
Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen
One of the reasons why I love this sunscreen it’s clear and leave absolutely no residue. It’s extremely easy to apply and works great under makeup! I tend to use this one as a primer on days I need to wear makeup.
Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Moisturizer
This one is a must if you have dry skin! Although this is a moisturizer, it still has an SPF of 45 and for those who hate the feeling of sunscreen and would rather put something that feels silky on the skin, this is the one for you.
Drunk Elephant Umbra Tint
I actually use this one more than any other sunscreen. Monday – Friday I normally don’t wear makeup to work so I rely on this to make me look less crazy. It has a tint to it helps even the look of your skin tone and it smells great. Some people aren’t a fan of this product because it leaves them greasy but I’ve found that a little goes a long way with this product.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Lightweight Spray
My go to for beach days or when I know I’ll be in the sun for a while. This sunscreen is easy to apply, lightweight and has an SPF of 100. Also- very affordable!
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Non-Greasy Sunscreen Stick
Similar to the previous sunscreen, except this one comes in stick form! I don’t use this one as much but it’s great to carry around because it’s smaller than the spray. Also, there’s no worries of leakage with this one!
There are so many sunscreens out there but these are just the few that I’ve been loving lately. Let me know if you’d like me to break down best sunscreens by skin type/body area!
